Set in the future, in an overpopulated world, in order to have a child, one must take another person's life to keep the balance. When Phoebe finds out she is pregnant by government correspondence, the name elected for her to contribute is her husbands. She is given 72 hours to make a decision; if she doesn’t decide, the government will come back for her. Phoebe struggles to decide between being a wife or bringing in a new life, but before she is able to make up her mind her husband sees the paperwork and makes a decision for her.
